Radiation

Radiation, or radiation therapy, uses electromagnetic waves (x-rays) to destroy or harm cancer cells. Radiation targets specific parts of the body where chemotherapy does not. Like chemotherapy, radiation may be administered before or after other treatments to attack cancer cells.

Radiation therapy is given from outside (external beam) or inside the body (brachytherapy). The length of treatment depends on the cancer size and type. Symptoms include fatigue, irritated skin, loss of appetite, nausea, hair loss, sore throat or mouth and shortness of breath.
