Stages of Cancer

Upon diagnosis, cancers are attributed a stage, depending on how far the cancer has grown and spread at that time.

Upon diagnosis, cancers are attributed a stage, depending on how far the cancer has grown and spread at that time. Scans, biopsies and other tests help to determine what stage a child’s cancer has reached. This then informs the treatment options that can be used to treat the cancer.

Stage 0

Abnormal cells are present but have not spread in the body.

Stage 1

Cancer is small and has only spread a little into nearby tissues.

Stage 2 & 3

Cancer is larger than the previous stage and has spread into nearby tissues or lymph nodes.

Stage 4

Abnormal cells have spread to other areas of the body.
